MANTIS™ Results Tutorial

This tutorial was created to help guide those who search the MANTIS™ database. It is broken down into separate areas to aid you in finding the information you need. If you have any problems, questions, or suggestions on what should be contained within this walk-through, please email the webmaster of ChiroACCESS and report your input.

Changing Your Search Strategy At The Results Screen

The Results Screen

Upon completion of choosing a search strategy and submitting the search, you will then be taken to the results screen. The results screen contains a list of records that have been pulled from the database because they match your search strategy and they will be formatted in the way you specified under your display options at the initial search screen (second set of options on the Basic Search and third set of options on the Advanced Search).

Viewing & Manipulating Your Results

Methods for viewing the entire citation and abstract of a record in the MANTIS™ Database

1.) By choosing the "Citation & Abstract" OR "Citation & Full Detail" from the display options on your search request page (Advanced Search OR Basic Search), you will see both the citation and abstract of each record, along with a link (if available) to the full-text of that document.

The MANTIS™ Database itself does NOT contain full-text articles. Although it DOES provide links to .pdf files of the full articles contained within the database. Currently the database has around 1,000 full-text links and we are building upon that number each day.

The article number for each citation provides a link to the full detail of that record 2.) The first column of the search results screen is the "Article Number" column and it contains the number that has been assigned to this article with the MANTIS™ Database. By clicking on this number, you may view the record detail for that article (this includes the citation, abstract, and headings assigned to the article).

3.) The third column of the search results screen is the "Select" column and it contains a checkbox for each record in the result set. By clicking on a checkbox (and turning it "on" or selecting it with a check), you can select multiple articles to narrow down your search results and view them in full detail. Please note that, when viewing a results set by title only, once you have selected a number of articles in this fashion and clicked on the "View Selected Articles" button, you will then view the restricted results set by citation & abstract. Also note that you may page through a results set and click on multiple boxes on a variety of pages and then click the "View Selected Articles" button. The system will "remember" all of the articles you have selected from the previous pages that you have viewed.

Click on the checkbox provided to the right of each article to mark it as selected

Short-cuts to searching from the results screen

There are two short-cuts that may be used to expand your search from the results screen.

Author listings from the citation are links to other articles published in the database by that same person

Author Searches: For each citation that is displayed, the authors of that article are listed. Each individual author name that is included in that citation is also a link to find any other articles that have been written by that specific author and included within the MANTIS™ Database. So to find other articles written by "Carr, BM", you would click on the link provided within that citation.

Note: Please note that the search engine will look for authors with the same last name/initial and that, sometimes, authors possess the same combination of these and will turn up when using the author search tool.

You may click on the Volume(Number) from a citation to view other articles published at the same time in that journalVolume Searches: The volume/number of each citation includes a link to pull up all of the published articles that have been indexed by MANTIS™ Database and included within that particular edition of that journal. So, when viewing your search results, you may click on this link to find other articlees that were published at the same time in that same publication.

Paging Through Your Results

Paging forward and back

Many searches yield a large amount of returned records from the database and these records are not easily displayed on one screen. If this is the case, the system will break the search up into multiple pages that may be navigated by either using the Page Forward and Page Back buttons (located at the bottom of the search page with the number of the page included in the text to notify the user to which page the button leads). And example of the page forward and page back button would be the buttons "Page 1" and "Page 3" if the user were on the second page of a series of search results. The "Page 1" button would take you back to the previous, or first, page of the search and the "Page 3" button would take you to the next page.

You may use the pull down menu to determine the page you wish to jump to (press the Go! button when you are done selecting)The "Go To" paging feature

You may also use the pull-down menu that accompanies your results screen. This menu, located between (if present) the page forward and page back buttons, contains a complete list of all of the pages of a search. You may use the menu to highlight a specific page you wish to "jump" to and then click the "Go!" button to take you to that search results page.

Remember that the number of pages that a set of results are broken down into is dependent on the "Show" pull-down menu located under your display options on your search request form (Advanced Search OR Basic Search).

Viewing The Full-Text of A Document (If Available)

A link like the one here will show up when full-text is availableFull-text links

Some records within the MANTIS™ Database have links to .pdf documents that contain the full-text of the articles. If the document is present, a link (similar to the one displayed to the right) will be presented for you to follow.

You will need the current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader* to view the documents. The current version of the reader can be downloaded here. Once you have the reader downloaded and installed, you may click the link and it will open up the .pdf document in your browser window for you to view.

Changing Your Search Strategy At The Results Screen

The Quick Search Box

You may change your search strategy and re-submit your search from the results page

At the top of your MANTIS™ Database search results, you will find a box with fields of information from your previous search page (Advanced, Basic, or Graphic). You may use this information to manipulate the current search strategy and re-submit your search for different results.

Note: Please note that this version of the search interface has limited options and, if you were beginning with the Advanced Search, you may not be able to complete the next search as desired. If so, please click the "back" button on your web browser and re-submit your search from the Advanced Search screen.
