FCER’s 2006 CCR a Gateway for Research Information

Norwalk, IA — The 2006 Conference on Chiropractic Research (CCR), hosted by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) in Chicago, IL, on September 15-16, was another fulfillment of FCER's mission to disseminate research to the chiropractic profession. The CCR provided attendees with three concurrent tracks - one with applications of research in various aspects of clinical practice, and two tracks of original research presentations.

The clinical track opened with a keynote presentation from William Morgan, D.C., titled "Making Chiropractic Relevant in Main Stream Healthcare." Dr. Morgan, as Clinical Department Head of the Chiropractic Clinic at the National Naval Medical Center, discussed the importance of staying current with the literature and applying results to practice. For many, knowledgeable application of results - and the ability to "sift through the chaff and find the kernels" - requires guidance. It is exactly in this capacity that FCER strives to fulfill its mission to disseminate chiropractic research with the CCR.

The two research tracks allowed for the presentation of approximately 80 original studies, representing research endeavors in the US, Canada, Australia, UK, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The research topics covered the broad areas of Diagnostic and Basic Sciences, Technique and Instrumentation, Cost-Effectiveness, Safety, Education, Epidemiology and Public Health, and Outcomes Research. The unique opportunity afforded at the CCR is the ability of the practicing clinician to meet and discuss research results with the researchers themselves. The clinical track is additionally designed to provide the attendee with information on how-and when-research can be used in practice and how clinical practice can guide further research. The clinical track, collectively titled "Translating Research Into Practice," (TRIP) is a stand-alone program that FCER hosts annually throughout the country. The TRIP program is also continually evolving to meet the needs of the profession and to address current issues and/or areas of concern.

In addition to Dr. Morgan's keynote presentation, topics discussed during the program in Chicago included the need for informed consent, improvements in coding, communicating with insurance companies, outcomes assessment in practice, the mixed methods of research, the status of research on cervical artery disease, and the progress of the CCGPP project. The highly regarded speakers included Anna Allen, RN, MSN, CLNC; Susan McClelland; Charles Herring, DC; Kim Christensen, DC; Ronald Shope, PhD; George B. McClelland, DC; and John J. Triano, DC, PhD.For those who were unable to attend the CCR in Chicago, the valuable information will be available in a variety of formats. The research abstracts presented, as well as a few abstracts from the invited speakers, are available as the Proceedings of the 2006 Conference on Chiropractic Research, in CD or booklet form from FCER for $39 (plus shipping). To order the Proceedings, please call FCER at 800-622-6309, or order on FCER's secure web site at www.fcer.org. The Table of Contents may be viewed on the web site as well.

In addition, FCER will be hosting the "Translating Research Into Practice" workshop on January 26-27, 2007, on the campus of the Texas College of Chiropractic in Pasadena, Texas. The program, registration, and CEU information will be available at www.fcer.org in the coming weeks.

In alternating years, FCER co-host's the research portion of the WFC's Biennial Conference as it travels internationally and will be known as the International Conference on Chiropractic Research (ICCR). The next ICCR will be with the WFC Congress in Vilamoura, the Algarve, Portugal. More information-including the ICCR Call for Papers - may be found at www.wfc.org.

FCER would like to thank the generous companies that helped to sponsor the CCR: NCMIC Insurance Company; Foot Levelers, Inc; ACOM Solutions, Inc/RAPID; National University of Health Sciences; Performance Health; Standard Process, Inc; Interactive Health; JR Consulting; and Breakthrough Coaching. As a small non-profit organization, the sponsorship provided by these companies helped to ensure a successful conference.
