2002 ICSM - Supporting the Practice of Chiropractic

Des Moines, Iowa—Nearly 250 DCs, MDs, PhDs, chiropractic students, and others attended the 2002 International Conference on Spinal Manipulation (ICSM), held October 3-5 in Toronto, Ontario. The 2002 ICSM was co-sponsored by the Consortium of Canadian Chiropractic Research Centres (CCCRC) and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC), which ran their 8th Annual Conference on Advancements in Chiropractic concurrently. The 2002 ICSM was truly international, with research and attendees representing the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, South America, and Africa.

The 2002 ICSM began with the opening reception, which featured awards to Scott Haldeman, D.C., MD, PhD, and Danielle R. Stewart-Smith, D.C. Dr. Haldeman was named the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research’s (FCER) 2002 Researcher of the Year. Dr. Stewart-Smith received the Canadian Chiropractic Association Young Investigator Award. Congratulations to both for their influential contributions to the science of chiropractic.

The conference itself featured presentations—both oral and poster—of 78 research papers, covering the broad topics of Research Design and Implementation, Outcomes Research, Clinically-Oriented Fundamental Basic Research, Psychosocial Aspects, Educational Research, and Public Healthcare Issues.

Said conference attendee J. C. Smith, D.C., "The numerous international researchers were given 15 minutes each to discuss their work, making for a fast-moving conference filled with many great presentations. It was refreshing to learn the mechanisms behind the results with spinal manipulative therapy (SMT). Also refreshing were the speakers’ insights into effective clinical methods that would enhance practice growth on a pragmatic rather than emotional basis."

Abstracts of all of the research presentations are available in the 2002 ICSM Proceedings. The Proceedings is available on CD-ROM or as a book by clicking here or by calling 800-622-6309.

The next research conference will be held in conjunction with the World Federation of Chiropractic’s (WFC) 7th Biennial Congress, co-sponsored by FCER, ACA, CCA, ICA and FICS. Many of the same prominent speakers in the clinical and research fields will be featured at this program. The WFC Biennial Congress will be held in Orlando on May 1-3 at the Hilton in the Walt Disney World Resort. For more on the upcoming WFC Congress, click here.
