High Ankle Sprain
DC Consult Editorial Staff - 9/11/2008

New evidence-based prevention, diagnosis, and treatment overviews of High Ankle Sprain (HAS) have been added to the list of clinical conditions available on DCConsult. The diagnosis overview discusses the evidence that exists for validity of the following tests: Ottawa Ankle Rules, Tuning Fork, Clinical Signs (External Rotation, Cotton Test, Crossed-leg Test, Squeeze Test [aka Hopkins Test], Dorsiflexion-Compression Test, Fibula Translation Test, and Syndesmosis Ligament Palpation), and Imaging (arthroscopy, MRI, plain film, and ultrasonograph). Among the conservative treatments and level of evidence discussed are functional treatment (including rest, ice, elevation; bracing; exercise; balance training; and manipulation/mobilization), comfrey root, and low level laser therapy; the medical treatments of NSAIDs and surgery are also discussed by evidence. The patient handout for High Ankle Sprain will be available soon; the patient handout for Lateral Ankle Sprain is now available.
