FCER, Chiropractic and Dearborn, MI, Lose Tireless Leader
In addition to service to the chiropractic profession through FCER, Dr. Mericas also served via the American Chiropractic Association and the Michigan State Chiropractic Association. Not one to limit his talents to chiropractic, Dr. Mericas was heavily involved in the community of Dearborn, Michigan, such that the city has named an arboretum in his honor on the campus of the Henry Ford Centennial Library. Dr. Mericas also served his country in World War II, earning two Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters. Dr. Mericas was a powerful force. Explained FCER Vice President George B. McClelland, D.C., “I was quite saddened to learn of the recent passing of a friend of mine and the chiropractic profession, Dr. Van Mericas. Van was one of the first people I met when I came into the ACA’s House of Delegates in 1981, and when I joined him on the Board of FCER in 1983. Van always gave the impression of being very stoic about most issues to the point where you were not sure he was actually listening or understanding of the points under discussion. However, if it was a significant point that he had an opinion about, he was quite direct and quite persuasive at getting his point across. Additionally, he was a master at ‘button hole’ politics and counting the votes. While these terms may not give you a warm impression, the way Van used them was always focused on what is best for our patients and the profession. It was never personal. He made an impact on chiropractic. He will be sorely missed.” The Board and Staff of FCER offer deepest regrets to all friends and family of Dr. Mericas. He is survived by his wife Kristalia, and daughters Sia and Katherine. Dr. Mericas was 87 years old. |
