FCER Announces 2005 Researcher of the Year—Cheryl Hawk DC PhD

Norwalk, Iowa—At every biennial International Conference on Chiropractic Research (ICCR —formerly ICSM), the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) presents an award of recognition to one person who has provided the chiropractic profession with outstanding strides in research—the Researcher of the Year Award. FCER is pleased to announce that the 2005 Researcher of the Year is Cheryl Hawk, D.C., Ph.D.

Dr. Hawk received her chiropractic degree from National College of Chiropractic and then earned her MS and PhD degrees in preventive medicine at the University of Iowa. Recently named the Dean of Research at the Southern California University of Health Sciences, Dr. Hawk has also held research and faculty positions at the Palmer College of Chiropractic, the Consortial Center for Chiropractic Research, and the Parker Research Institute. Her tenure as researcher has led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed biomedical journals, including Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Journal of the Neuromusculoskeletal System, Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, Journal of Rural Health, Journal of the American Geriatric Society and others. In addition, she is one of the few Doctors of Chiropractic to have successfully obtained federal grant funding from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). For her research efforts in support of chiropractic, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) named Dr. Hawk the Researcher of the Year in 2002.

FCER’s selection of Researcher of the Year comes following discussion of nominees by the Board of Trustees. FCER’s Director of Research, Anthony L. Rosner, Ph.D., summarized the rationale for the selection of Dr. Cheryl Hawk as the 2005 winner:

Dr. Hawk’s numerous awards are impressive and underscore her painstaking, reflective, and deeply committed approach to both teaching and research.  Her thoughtful publications seem to have encompassed what I believe are some of the most critical and under-researched areas of chiropractic healthcare, including clinical research design issues, practice-based research, development of a manual placebo procedure (one of the most critical flaws in much of the published research), primary care, geriatric care, women’s health problems, reliabilities of various outcome instruments, and prevention and maintenance.

FCER presented the 2005 Researcher of the Year Award to Cheryl Hawk, DC, PhD, on June 17 at the 2005 ICCR, held in conjunction with the 8th Biennial World Federation of Chiropractic Congress in Sydney, Australia.
