Application Guidelines

The primary objective of this program is to increase the number of qualified researchers in fields pertaining to chiropractic at accredited institutions. The residency is intended to provide a bridge to a full-time appointment. Over the coming years, growth in the quantity and quality of chiropractic research will depend in great part on the number of trained research scientists committed to conducting research.

  1. POLICIES:

  1. Although priority will be given to graduates of FCER's Fellowship Program, other applicants with advanced, research-oriented graduate degrees will also be given consideration for support.

  2. Priority will be given to interns who would have a full-time appointment at a chiropractic college. Applicants from any accredited research institution will be considered, provided that there is ample evidence that a full-time appointment following the residency is highly likely. Regardless of the institutional nature of the appointment, funded interns must be committed to a program of chiropractic research that is consistent with FCER's research funding priorities.

  3. FCER will fund a residency for a 3-year appointment, the funding to be dependent upon the availability of qualified individuals who can make a 3-year commitment.

  4. FCER customarily provides interns with an annual stipend of $20,000. The host college will be expected to provide a minimum of $5,000 to the intern in addition to the FCER stipend. For any teaching assignments, the intern is expected to receive additional remuneration from the college for any teaching assignments.

  5. No more than 20% of an intern's time can be devoted to teaching. This time includes preparation activities, meeting with students, and evaluation of student performance. FCER, the host college, and the intern will develop a 3-year research program which is consistent with the intern's training, FCER's research priorities, and the college's facilities and research personnel.

  6. An individual will be eligible for one 3-year internship. Depending upon the pool of applicants and available funds, FCER may or may not fund an internship at the full stipend level in a given fiscal year.

  7. An intern who is approved for funding may begin the appointment effective September 1 of that same year.

  8. Documentation of satisfactory progress will be required for continuation of funding.

  1. APPLICATION INFORMATION:

  1. Date of Submission and Board Consideration:

The application deadline for the FCER Residency is March 1. Applications and all supporting documents [i.e., letters of recommendation and transcripts] must be received by FCER by this date. Five copies of the application are required for submission.

One of the supporting documents is the Institutional Application. This form must be completed by personnel at the chiropractic college at which you wish to be a resident. The form is available from FCER at the following link:

http://www.fcer.org/html/Research/Residency/download.htm

Applications received by March 1 are eligible for funding consideration by the FCER Board of Trustees at their annual meeting, normally held in the summer months. Announcement of awards is made within 2 weeks of the funding decision.

  1. Application Review:

Upon receipt by FCER, applications are reviewed for completeness by FCER's Director of Education, who may request additional information or clarification of information received. Applications are then reviewed by FCER's Education Committee with an evaluation of the application with regard to FCER's funding availability and priorities.

All documentation is submitted to FCER's Board of Trustees for final action. The Board makes final decisions based upon the Education Committee's recommendations, monies available, and overall funding priorities.

  1. Renewal Application:

Using the standard application form, renewal applications are to be filed by Residents by the application deadline of March 1. Residents requesting additional application forms must contact FCER's Director of Education.

  1. Reporting Requirements:
